Editing Menus

When setting-up a course site and throughout the semester, you’re going to want to add items to the main navigation menu. To do so follow the instructions below:

  • Go to Dashboard > Appearance > Menus
  • Click on the Pages dropdown on the left side of the Menus screen
  • Select the Page(s) you want to add to the Menu (Note: You might have to look under the View All tab if you don’t see your page(s) under the Most Recent tab.)
  • Click Add to Menu
  • You can reorder menu items by dragging and dropping them in the order you want
  • You can create sub-menu items by dragging the item to the right
  • You can delete a menu item by clicking on the drop-down arrow on the item and clicking Remove

Adding a Category to the Menu

  • Go to Dashboard > Appearance > Menus
  • Click on the Categories dropdown on the left side of the Menus screen
  • Select the Categories(s) you want to add to the Menu (Note: You might have to look under the View All tab if you don’t see your page(s) under the Most Recent tab.)
  • Click Add to Menu
  • You can reorder menu items by dragging and dropping them in the order you want

Adding a Top Level Menu Item

Sometimes when you create a menu, you want a top level item that doesn’t go anywhere, but just lets you group things under that menu item. (See Assignments or Course Documents on the template site menu.)

  • Go to Dashboard > Appearance > Menus
  • Click on the Custom Link dropdown on the left side of the Menus screen
  • In the URL box put a pound sign: #
  • In the Link Text put what you’d like the menu item to say
  • Click Add to Menu
  • You can reorder menu items by dragging and dropping them in the order you want

Adding a Custom Link

You can also add a Custom Link to an outside website.

  • Go to Dashboard > Appearance > Menus
  • Click on the Custom Link dropdown on the left side of the Menus screen
  • In the URL box put paste the outside URL that you’d like to link to
  • In the Link Text put what you’d like the menu item to say
  • Click Add to Menu
  • You can reorder menu items by dragging and dropping them in the order you want

Name of Professor

This is a sample author’s post. Have your students introduce themselves or each other as a way to familiarize them with the course site. Include an image, or a link. They can read about how to do those things under Publishing a Post.
